Ha ha, that's pretty much my path. 86 Sq Heston. We shared our site with the Pongos. There was a Territorial Army base there with an indoor range.

22s are pretty much like air rifles (can still kill) the 303 when I first fired it was like a fuckin cannon!

Yea that 7.62 Armalite I never got on with. My Action Man with Eagle Eyes was a better shot.

Would like to have a crack again at both.

Re: Plymouth
That's how I started shooting.
Was in the Army cadets at school and found that I was pretty good at it. Got the marksman's badge within 6 months at 14.
Small bore was always my thing as it is a very zen sport. The whole idea is to lie down, empty your mind and be as still as possible.
Shot for London U-21 at 17 and was in the same team as a couple of England internationals at my club.
Full bore is fun - came third in the Bren Gun pairs at Bisley when I was with the cadets but those .303 Lee Enfields were evil.
I stopped when I went to University and only took it up again after 30 year when I moved. Did well enough to make into the Sussex reserve team and we won out division. My rifle is older then me (it was made in 1962) and still hits the middle of the middle of the dot in the ten ring if it wasn't for the git shooting it.

I was in 2048th Dagenham ATC mate, had to learn how to handle the old lee enfields too, loved the .303, thought the .22 was a bit poncy and never got my head round the .762 but just loved shooting.

I got both my marksman badges (crossed rifles) in less than 1 year and my eyesight is still ok (with glasses), always win all the prizes at the fair still!

Does this mean you think it's too obvious to be proper news...

Same here mate. Loved it. Used to go down to Bisley and Purfleet to shoot. 22s and 303s . Big ole Lee Enfields .

That was going back when I was in the air cadets, got in the shooting team.

Like to have a go back, mincer's ain't what they used to be.

Re: Plymouth
I did quite bit of shooting when I was younger, from about 14 years old in cadets, I was very good at it and loved it.

I've been trying to decide whether to get a shotgun for clay and other pursuits locally or whether to take up archery. I'm leaning towards the gun tbh.

Even in the States where we seems to hear about it a lot, mass shootings are 0.2% of firearm deaths. Suicide is the highest. The others shown here:

"In 2019, 14,861 people in the U.S. died from firearm homicide, accounting for 37% of total deaths from firearms.
....

The other 3% of firearm deaths are unintentional, undetermined, from legal intervention, or from public mass shootings (0.2% of total firearm deaths)."

Shame Jake Davison, Michael Ryan and Thomas Hamilton and others, didn't feel the same way.

Re: Plymouth
In the late eighties and early nineties, I belonged to two pistol shooting clubs.
At the time, I legally owned three fire arms (one was a Magnum .357, the other two were .22 pistols)
I also reloaded my own cartridges up to a total of 1,000 rounds of ammunition.
I could have bought and registered more firearms such as 9mm semi automatic or a .45 magnum but felt that three guns were enough for the sport.
I never once felt the inclination to use my guns on another human being

Re: Plymouth
Roul Moat's gun wasn't legally held, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong)

You are right.

One of the very few gun massacres with an illegally procured firearm.

Fortunately gun massacres are very are, as the weapons involved (assault rifle and handgun, Hungerford, handguns Dunblane) have largely been banned from legal ownership.

Roul Moat's gun wasn't legally held, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) To be fair the Cumbia shootings were with a legally held shotgun (2010). Before that the last mass killing with a legally held firearm was Dunblane in 1996. Before that, Hungerford in 1987. How many more in the last 40 years? My point was they're incredibly rare..

The vast majority of firearms used in crime are illegally held, and that's a whole different kettle of fish
